On the morning of January 16, middle school students, teachers, and parents gathered in Powell Theater to cheer on the 20 students competing in the 2018 Wesleyan School Spelling Bee. After 21 rounds of spelling, 7th grade student, Steven Guyer, was declared the 2018 Spelling Bee Champion, and 8th grade student, Kayla Kim, was awarded runner-up. Steven and Kayla will represent Wesleyan in the first round of the GISA Spelling Bee on February 8. Around 50 middle school students were members of the inaugural Wordsmith Club that met three times during the fall to practice spelling and learn new words. Students in the Wordsmith club took a spelling and vocabulary test, and 20 students with the highest scores then participated in the school spelling bee.
