Middle school students participate in book clubs
Through a recent student book club initiative, a passion for reading is blooming in middle school! Joseph Antionio, middle school principal, Shonda Duke, middle school librarian, and John Creed, sixth grade boys chair and English teacher, created the book club initiative as a way to enhance the reading culture in middle school.
“We started with strengthening the faculty reading culture, which has been awesome, so we are now expanding it to students,” smiles Antonio. “We liked the idea of having a ‘low stakes, challenge by choice’ option to read with a small group of students and a faculty member."
Antonio, Duke, and Creed invited all middle school students to consider joining one of the seven books clubs that were offered. Each book club is led by a faculty member who selected a young adult book that students would enjoy discussing. The seven books cover a variety of genres and topics.
The book clubs will read The Prettiest by Brigit Young, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis, Sisterhood of Sleuths by Jennifer Chambliss Bertman, Restart by Gordon Korman, Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus by Dusti Bowling, and The Doughnut Fix by Jessie Janowitz, and more.
About 6-8 students attend each book club, and the groups are scheduled to meet 3-4 times as paced by the faculty member leading the book club.
