Wesleyan inducts Hernandez '11, Jones '15, Mack '16, and West '18 into the Athletic Circle of Honor
On Friday, Jan. 5, Wesleyan School inducted Zach Hernandez ‘11, Jahmai Jones ‘15, Jordan Mack ‘16, and Sutton West ‘18 to the Wesleyan School Athletic Circle of Honor.
“The Wesleyan Athletic Circle of Honor was created to show appreciation to members of the Wesleyan community who made significant contributions to Wesleyan athletics. Those chosen have influenced our community through their ability, dedication, and service to our athletic program while at Wesleyan and following their graduation,” reflected Chris Cleveland, head of school.
Hernandez’s contributed to Wesleyan athletics as a vital member of the boys’ swim and dive team where his gifts and abilities were on display as an exceptional diver. He helped the team earn a state runner-up finish in 2010, and then he contributed to the school’s first boys swim and dive state championship team in 2011. In addition to being a member of a highly successful team, Hernandez’s individual accomplishments are remarkable. He was a three-time high school all-American, a three-time all-county selection, and won two individual state championships. Nearly 13 years after his graduation, he still holds the school record for most points scored for six dives in a dual meet.
Hernandez continued his diving career at the University of Florida where he was a member of four consecutive SEC team championships, was an all-American in platform diving in 2015, and was a four-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll. He graduated from the University of Florida in 2016 with a bachelor's degree in business finance and added an MBA from the University of Georgia in 2020. He is currently a coach for the Atlanta Diving Association and works as a business analyst for Philips Health Systems in Atlanta, Georgia.
Jones played football and baseball at Wesleyan. Jones lettered four times in baseball, and he holds a spot in the Wesleyan baseball top five for career hits, doubles, home runs, and runs scored. He is second in career batting average and first for career stolen bases. Additionally, he is in the top five for most hits in a season, most doubles in a season, and runs scored in a season, and he holds the top spot for stolen bases for a season. Jones concluded his Wesleyan baseball career as the leader of the 2015 state championship team and was named the Player of the Year by the Gwinnett Dugout Club, the Gwinnett Daily Post, and the National Christian School Athletic Association. Louisville Slugger named him a high school all-American as both a junior and a senior. In football, he was a two-year letter winner, was second-team all-county, and can still be found on the football record board for receiving yards, touchdown receptions, and season receptions.
Jones was selected in the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Los Angeles Angels, and in 2020, made his major league debut. He has also played with the Baltimore Orioles, Los Angeles Dodgers, and his current team, the Milwaukee Brewers as an infielder, outfielder, and designated hitter.
Mack lettered in football, basketball, and track and field, and as a senior, he was named the school’s MVP Athlete. In football, he was first-team all-region, second-team all-county, and first-team all-state as a senior and the unquestioned leader of the Wolves defense. In track and field, he played a significant role in leading the boys’ team to their first and only state championship to date. He ended his senior year as the state champion in the high jump and being named all-county. A quick look at the track and field record board will speak loudly to Mack’s excellence. He still holds the school record in the high jump, 100 meters, 4x100 meter relay, and 4x400 meter relay.
Mack continued his athletic career in college as a football player at the University of Virginia. As a fourth year student, he was named a team captain and won the Jim Tatum Award, the highest academic award an ACC football player can earn. He graduated from UVA in 2019 with a degree in youth and social innovation and added a master's degree in intercollegiate athletic administration from UVA in 2020. Currently, he serves as an assistant director of athletics development at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.
West was a basketball, track and field, and soccer athlete, and in her four years as a high school student, she was a member of five state championship teams and four state runner-up teams. As a senior, she was named the school’s MVP Athlete. In basketball, she played in four consecutive state championship games, winning the title three times. As a senior, she was named second-team all-region, first-team all-county, and first-team all-state. As a junior, West was a significant part of the 2017 girls soccer state championship team, scoring a goal in the final game to help the team win their first state title. In track and field, after being a part of three state runner-up teams, West led the 2018 team to the program’s second girls track and field state title. She was a four-time state champion in the 4x400 meter relay, a two-time state champion in the 4x100 meter relay, and a four-time all-county selection. Additionally, she was the state runner-up in the high jump two times and was the state runner-up in the 400 meter two times. She continues to hold the one of the top four spots on the girls track and field record bord for the high jump, 300 meter hurdles, 400 meters, 4x100 meter relay, 4x400 meter relay, and scored the second-most points in the state meet in school history.
After playing basketball at Furman University, West graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in biomedical engineering. She currently works in Atlanta as a cardiac rhythm management field clinical representative, and in her free time, she coaches middle school girls basketball at Wesleyan.
