Missions spotlight: New Mexico team serves on Navajo reservation

Wesleyan faculty and high school students spent their spring break in New Mexico serving with Christ For All Nations (CFAN) New Mexico, led by a guide with Joshua Expeditions. The mission of CFAN New Mexico is to “extend the teaching and preaching of the scriptures in [their] local churches, schools, and vacation Bible schools (VBS).” Together, the team from Wesleyan partnered with Christ For All Nations to lead a VBS for Navajo children.

In addition to leading a VBS, Wesleyan students and staff engaged in several work projects on the Christ for All Nations facility where they stayed. These projects included tearing down a barn, unloading food for a food pantry, completing yard work, and painting a mural for the ministry.

“The most impactful part of the trip was hearing people within the church tell their stories and getting to hear about how they remain faithful even through the great hardships they face living on the Navajo reservation,” reflected senior Bond Surber.

As the students served the Navajo children, they got to experience the culture first-hand.

“We got to learn a ton about Navajo culture. One day we got to make fried bread, which is a common Navajo dish,” shared Surber.

On their final full day of the trip, the Wesleyan team had the opportunity to visit the Chaco Culture National Historical Park located in the Chaco Canyon of New Mexico. The park is known for preserving one of the most important pre-Columbian cultural and historical areas in the United States.

Thank you, New Mexico team, for being a part of what the Lord is accomplishing on the Navajo reservation and for serving the Navajo people.
