Wesleyan Announces New Diversity Coordinator Positions

Wesleyan School is pleased to announce the creation of three new diversity coordinator positions in the lower, middle, and high schools. In this role, the diversity coordinators will assist the Director of Diversity, Dr. Jennifer Pinkett Smith, as a support and resource to faculty within their respective division.

The diversity coordinators will field basic questions and concerns about cultural concerns for students and families. Maintaining awareness of the needs for their respective division concerning relationship, sensitivity and inclusion, the diversity coordinators will occasionally lead short discussions within their division on topics relative to cultural sensitivity, relationships and how to support our students and families of color. Additionally, they will lead Parent Councils at their respective divisions. Read below to meet our new diversity coordinators.
 
Acacia Kelly will serve as the diversity coordinator for the lower school. Acacia holds a Bachelor of Science degree in English and Philosophy from the University of North Carolina as well as a Master of Science in Education from Johns Hopkins. Acacia has been teaching for 5 years, starting as a fourth grade teacher at Henderson Collegiate Charter School in Henderson, North Carolina. Upon arriving at Wesleyan, Acacia was a teaching assistant for second grade and is currently teaching fourth grade. Acacia coaches middle school cheerleading and has been a part of the mission trip team in Atlanta. She is a Teach for America 2015 Corps Member and continues to sharpen her tools as an educator. Acacia has visited North Star Academy in New Jersey and Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta to further diversify her teaching to meet the needs of her students. We are excited to have Acacia share her energy and ideas around diversity and inclusion with the lower school community.
 
Indyasia Fowler will serve as the diversity coordinator for the middle school. Indyasia holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry and Chemistry Education with a minor in Biblical Studies from Lee University, a Master’s degree in Administration and Policy from the University of Georgia and is currently a doctoral candidate for Educational Leadership at the University of Georgia. Indyasia will be starting her fourth year of teaching and is passionate about her students. She has coached middle school cheerleading, middle school track and has been a part of the mission trip team to Nicaragua. Indyasia brings a creativity to her classroom that reaches the diverse learner. She presented at the 2019 GISA Conference on the topic: Classroom Design for Gen Z Student Success. Indyasia also attended the People of Color Conference to gain further insight in connecting and educating students and teachers around diversity. Indyasia will be a powerful voice to engage and support diversity, inclusion, and belonging in the middle school.

Isiah Hill will serve as the diversity coordinator for the high school. Isiah has extensive teaching and mentoring experience which will be a great asset to the high school community. Isiah holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from North Carolina Central University and a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from The Georgia Institute of Technology. Isiah is entering his 17th year of teaching and is highly involved in the lives of the students in the high school. Isiah has coached middle school football and continues to coach high school track and field. Isiah is the 11th grade chair for boys, co-sponsor for the G.R.A.C.E. Diversity Club, led a mission trip to Ecuador, and serves as a commissioner on the Educator Ethics Review Committee for the Georgia Professional Standards Commission. Isiah’s passion for teaching, love for students, and his rich connections with faculty will be a great addition to the work and growth of diversity in the high school.
