High School Executive Profiles Launched

A new resource has recently become available for high school students that will help them understand their strengths and opportunities for growth in their executive function skill set. Executive function skills are needed to get things done, and research has indicated strong executive skills remain one of the most reliable predictors of success in academics and in life, beating out test scores, IQ, and socioeconomic status. Students will now have access to a profile that will give them an assessment and recommendations based on their current skill set.
Director of Academic Support Karyn Vickery commented on the launch saying, “With the understanding of executive skills and the impact they have on life and learning, the students can begin to look at their own profiles. Areas of skill strengths can be used to overcome challenges. If students are struggling with a particular skill, they can look for strategies to improve, and our faculty will be there to support them. Self-awareness is key to self-improvement.”
Going forward, grade chairs are sharing the profiles with parents and students. The profiles will help to start a discussion and identify possible goals for growth in different skills. Knowing these strengths and struggles can help with planning coursework and extracurricular loads.

Executive function and self-regulation skills are the mental processes that enable us to plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and juggle multiple tasks successfully. Just as an air traffic control system at a busy airport safely manages the arrivals and departures of many aircraft on multiple runways, the brain needs this skill set to filter distractions, prioritize tasks, set and achieve goals, and control impulses.
