High School Students Attend Governor's Honors Program

August 27, 2019

This past June and July, seniors Lindsey Mains, Tyler Sturtevant, and Andy Yang were invited to study in the prestigious Georgia Governor’s Honors Program (GHP) at Berry College. Approximately 650 students from across the state were chosen to attend, which represents one-fourth of 1% of eligible sophomores and juniors in the state.

Each student was able to choose a major while at the program; Lindsey focused on communicative arts, Tyler on theatre, and Andy on mathematics.
For Andy, mathematics focused primarily on unorthodox math not typically found in high school curriculums. He took classes on topics such as game theory, the concept of infinity, and number theory. Andy recalled one of his favorite moments saying, “I will always remember the convention near the end of GHP, where people from various majors presented their final projects. It was so fun and exciting to share with others about what I had been working on for the past four weeks (a project on poker probability with wild cards) and see what other people had done.”

Lindsey’s experience with the communicative arts focused on how to better share ideas with others, and how to analyze texts and media beyond traditional analyses. Lindsey also enjoyed the camaraderie of the program saying, “I will always remember the relationships that I made at GHP and the program’s supportive environment.”

Tyler had the opportunity to learn specific acting techniques, such as the Michael Chekhov technique, a form of acting that allows the actor to take an imaginative approach to experiencing truth in the moment. Outside of acting, meeting new students and teachers from across the state was also a highlight for Tyler. “The experience of becoming life-long friends with people that I have never met in only four weeks is something I’ll always remember. There were people from all different backgrounds, yet it didn’t matter. No one judged you, so you were able to talk to everyone.”
