Wesleyan School inducts Cannon, Kavel, and Reed into the Athletic Circle of Honor
On Friday, Jan. 6, Wesleyan School inducted the 2023 class to the Wesleyan School Athletic Circle of Honor. This year’s inductees were Tucker Cannon ‘16, Jameson Kavel ‘17, and Kylie Reed ‘16.
“The Circle of Honor induction is one of my favorite nights of the year because we get to honor our alumni who have made significant contributions to Wesleyan athletics,” states Lacy Gilbert, director of athletics. “Tucker, Jameson, and Kylie have influenced and impacted our community through their ability, dedication, and service to our athletic program while at Wesleyan and following their graduation.”
While at Wesleyan, Cannon earned varsity letters in soccer, basketball, track and field, golf, tennis, swim and dive, and football. He was a significant contributor to the football program for three years, and as a senior, Cannon earned second team all-region recognition and an honorable mention on the all-state team. In 2016, he capped his Wesleyan athletics career with a remarkable weekend during which he won a team state championship as a starter for the undefeated boys soccer team, and then, 24 hours later, he won a state championship in the 4x400 relay, helping the boys track and field team earn its first state championship. Upon graduating, Cannon continued his football career at Mercer University in Macon. He ranks in the top 10 in the Mercer record book for career receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns, as well as for most yards and receptions in a season. While at Mercer, he was selected for the Academic All-SoCon Team and the Academic All-District IV team in 2019. Cannon earned a bachelor's degree in chemical commerce with a minor in statistics and computer science from Mercer University. He is currently a self-employed stock trader.
As a Wesleyan student, Kavel played softball and basketball, amassing eight varsity letters- four in each sport. Her softball career accomplishments are staggering, having been named to the all-region and all-county teams all four years of high school. As both a junior and senior, she was the region player of the year, the state player of the year, and an NCSAA All-American. Her name continues to hold a significant place in the Wesleyan softball record book, ranking first in career assists and second in career hits, stolen bases, and runs scored. She has the third-highest career batting average. After graduating, Kavel continued her softball career at Duke University where she earned a degree in political science with a minor in psychology. She was first-team All-ACC as a junior and senior and was named ACC Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2022. She ended her Duke career as the program’s all-time leader in games played, games started, at-bats, runs scored, hits, doubles, home runs, stolen bases, and walks. She is currently a J.D. candidate at the University of North Carolina School of Law.
During her time at Wesleyan, Reed was a member of the track and field and cross country teams, and she served as a manager for the swim and dive team. A four-year letter winner in cross country, she was a member of two state championship teams and two teams that finished as runner-up at the state meet. Reed was a three-time honorable mention all-county runner and was named all-state as a sophomore and a senior. She lettered in track all four years and was a member of teams that earned consecutive runner-up finishes at the state meet during her junior and senior years. She was named all-county and all-state as a sophomore, junior, and senior and won three relay state titles and one relay state runner-up. She was a member of the 2016 4x400 relay team that still holds the school record, and she holds the fourth fastest time in the 800 in school history, finishing third in the state meet in that event as a junior and senior. After graduation, Reed attended Wake Forest University where she majored in health exercise and science with a minor in biology. She is currently a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Nutrition at the University of North Carolina.
