Middle and high school chorus concert dazzles audience

On Monday, Oct. 3, the middle and high school chorus captivated an audience of friends and families in Powell Theater. Meg Foster, director of fine arts and middle school chorus teacher, was impressed by the confidence shown by the choruses.
The singers gave a solid first performance of the year! Many are new to chorus, and they took the stage with confidence and class,” states Foster.

The concert opened with three songs by the 5th grade chorus:
  • “A Certain Young Fellow,” a traditional folk song arranged by Vicki Tucker Courtney.
  • “You Renew My Soul” by Ruth Elaine Schram.
  • “Rise, Shine, Little Light!” a traditional spiritual arranged by Sally K. Albrecht.
Fifth grade soloists included Isabella Slifko, Benjamin Ritzheimer, and Katherine Jacobs.

The combined 5th through 8th grade chorus followed with the song “Lovely Day” by Bill Withers and Skip Scarborough and arranged by Robert T. Gibson. Anna Claire Kadzis performed a solo, while Brad Meyer, high school chorus teacher, played bass and Daniel Guo played the drums.

The Advanced Chorus followed with three songs:

  • “Lovely Evening,” a traditional German canon arranged by Ruth Morris Gray .
  • “Caritas Canon,” a traditional Latin canon arranged by Andy Beck.
  • “Lean On Me” by Bill Withers and arranged by Jack Zaino.
Advanced Chorus soloists were Brooke Parks and Angel Walker.

Chamber Singers closed the concert with the following songs:

  • “Down to the River to Pray” arranged by Scot Crandal.
  • “Non Nobis Domine” by Robert Ruhrer.
  • “Strom Comin’” by Ruth Moody.
  • “Bring Me Little Water Sylvie” by Huddie Ledbetter.
Chamber Singer soloists included Norah Mukana, Ellie Simmons, and Allison Reding.

I hope that these songs stick with them for a long time – particularly the ones with Biblically based text. I’m so proud of them and look forward to tackling Christmas music next,” says Foster.
