Wesleyan's chess team finishes as the state runner's up

On Wednesday, April 17, Wesleyan’s inaugural competitive chess team finished as the state runner’s up after competing against 48 individuals in an all-day tournament at Strong Rock Christian School.
The competition was a round-robin style tournament with six rounds in total. Each round, members of the team were paired with another student from a different school, and the players competed for 15 minutes. A win counts for one point, a draw is worth half of a point, and a loss is zero. After each round, the players are paired up with someone with a similar record, and once all six rounds were played, the team scores are tallied up. The points earned by the top four players are combined for the team score.

“Going into the tournament, we expected that the students would be faced with some very strong opponents. We were happily surprised when all five of our students came back from their first game with a win,” beams Ryder Frost, faculty fellow and chess team advisor. “From there it only got tougher, but we were happy with our results, and the students were encouraged to practice hard and be stronger players for their next tournament.”

Way to go, chess team!
