Wesleyan's college advising office offers College Application Workshops
In early August, the Wesleyan School college advising office offered three College Application Workshop sessions for the Class of 2024. The workshops provided guidance and best practices for the seniors as they begin the college application process.
Ken Connor, director of college advising, reviewed an application roadmap and other documents that guide the seniors through the year. Students filled out their application worksheets, which helped organize their upcoming deadlines and essay prompts, as well as helped to determine the best type of application to use. During the workshop, students were strongly encouraged to always read and respond to emails from colleges and their college advisors.
Connor reminded students that the five-person college advising team is available throughout the school year to brainstorm with seniors as they work through their personal statements and supplemental writings for applications. Students were encouraged to have an advisor review all essays and applications prior to submission. Connor explained that once the student has submitted an application, they will complete a form that clears the college advisor to release all supporting documentation to the college.
Students used the remainder of the workshop to fill out the Common Application; each year, more than 1 million students apply to more than 1,000 Common App member colleges through the online college application platform. Connor explained the platform to students and shared tips to effectively utilize and navigate the platform.
The workshops had strong attendance with over 90 percent of seniors attending and students expressed their appreciation for the time to begin this important step in the college application process.
