Lower school students study sea turtles

In honor of turtle nesting season on Georgia beaches, first grade students are studying sea turtles and pretended to be sea turtle parents by making a nest in the sand on the lower school playground.
“A week after the nest was built, it was sea turtle hatchling season, and we found pretend ‘sea turtle eggs’ in the nests,” explains Sara Cooper, lower school science teacher.

Having the nest on the playground provides students with a great opportunity to practice leaving the nests unbothered when visiting the beach this summer.

“Sea turtles are endangered, and it is illegal to touch or be in possession of any parts of a sea turtle,” says Cooper.

This activity comes after first graders were put into groups to research a different species of sea turtle that can be found off the coast of Georgia. Students were asked to present their research to their classmates.
The unit ended with the first graders building life-size models of sea turtles that are displayed in the lower school.

Great work, first grade!
