Fourth grade students discuss the greatest commandments
During their T.I.E.D. Together lesson for the month, Mrs. Park’s fourth grade students discussed the greatest commandments, to love God and to love one another.
Mark 12:30-31 says, “And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second [greatest commandment] is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
Students read “Creative God, Colorful Us” by Trillia J. Newbell, which further discussed Mark 12 and prompted students to consider the gravity of the word “love.” The book discusses how Christians have a helper, the Holy Spirit, that equips those who are in Christ to love God and love their neighbors.
“Your neighbor is anyone you talk to, see, or interact with,” explained Ahreum Park, fourth grade teacher.
As Park explained the radical call for Christians to love others, even those who mistreat them, students discussed Martin Luther King, Jr. and how he exemplified that call.
“He wasn’t violent. He wasn’t mean back. He responded kindly by loving his neighbor,” reflected Park.
