Omicron teams serve the community
Made up of 5th to 8th grade students desiring to serve our local community, middle school Omicron teams are in full swing this week! Additionally, this year, there have been three high school Omicron teams, and the next high school group will begin following spring break.
For the next few weeks, the middle school Omicron team will go to Corners Outreach two days a week. The mission of Corners Outreach is to equip underserved students of color to lead full lives. Wesleyan students volunteer with Corners Outreach’s “Academy” program by helping students with reading and math.
Earlier in the year, the high school Omicron teams also served with Corners Outreach, as well as Spring of Peace. Spring of Peace’s mission is to be a missionary outpost in primarily Hispanic communities, making a difference in the lives of elementary school kids and their parents.
“Through Omicron this year, I have gotten to know some fourth grade girls who have stories they love to share. Being around these sweet girls has taught me the importance of loving the people around us and how to live in joy,” reflects Caitlin Bridgers ‘23.
In the same way that Wesleyan values building and maintaining relationships within the Wesleyan community, we also understand the importance of being a good neighbor and being intentional with our broader, local community.
“Our Omicron team members sign up for an 8-week session, and they go to the same places every week,” describes Corrie Nash, assistant director of Christian life: service and high school math teacher. “I love that our students are able to interact with the same children and build relationships and that Wesleyan is able to support the organizations year-round.”
