Middle school students learn best practices for using their planners at home

Middle school students gathered to learn about best practices for using their planners at home during middle school flex time.
“Surviving is not enough. We want you to thrive, and planning can help you do that,” opened Karyn Vickery, director of academic support.

Vickery reminded students of the importance of executive functions or skills that help in planning, focusing, and juggling multiple tasks. She encouraged students to challenge themselves to grow in their planning skills and to make planning a regular habit.

Kim Youmans, learning specialist, presented best practices for students to use their planners at home. These best practices included:
  • Checking off their completed homework assignments.
  • Updating their personal plans.
  • Backward planning for upcoming tests, projects, and papers.
  • Including their parents for support.
  • And remembering to bring their planners to school.
Youmans reminded the students that their planners are ultimately a resource created for them. Planners are intended to help with stress management and to enable each student to put their best foot forward.

“Our hope for you is that your planner helps you have a winning semester and year,” explained Vickery.

We are so thankful for the academic support provided at Wesleyan, and we are proud of the students who continue to improve their planning skills.
