Wesleyan hosts college admissions representatives for College Night

On Wednesday, Nov. 3, the College Advising Office welcomed representatives from Clemson University, the University of South Carolina, Wake Forest University, and Agnes Scott College to campus for College Night.
The College Night panelists included Dr. Richard (Rick) Barth, director of undergraduate admissions at Clemson University; Lisa Cote, senior associate director for recruitment at the University of South Carolina; Thomas Ray, associate dean of admissions at Wake Forest University; and Miya Walker, director of admission at Agnes Scott College. The representatives answered a wide range of questions about the college admissions process from the application process itself to how to best utilize time on a college tour. Ken Connor, director of college advising, served as the panelist host.

“Colleges are choosing you, but you are also choosing them,” shared Walker. “Make sure you know what your priorities are.”

Walker spoke about the importance of students immersing themselves into the culture and life of the colleges they visit during their search process. She encouraged students to eat in the dining hall, take time to visit residence halls, and even attend sporting events if possible.

The college representatives clarified many ambiguities and answered common questions concerning the college admissions process like differences in early action, early decision, etc. No two colleges are the exact same when it comes to the application process, so students were prompted to understand the expectations of the institutions they apply to.

Juniors in attendance were also encouraged to finish their senior year strong next year and were reminded that colleges are looking for individuals who are driven and persevering.

“We look at the rigor from the start to the end of your experience,” said Ray. “Keep up the effort and hard work because colleges are looking for people who challenge and push themselves beyond the bare minimum.”

The night ended with an opportunity for parents to directly ask the college representatives any remaining questions.

Thank you to the admissions representatives and all who attended College Night.
