Eighth Grade students walk the runway in Spanish class

Students in Mrs. Sanchez’s Spanish class walked the runway in a fashion show after describing their outfits to their classmates using Spanish vocabulary words.
“Several years ago, students asked if they could do a fashion show since they were learning about clothes, and over the years it has progressed into a full-blown show,” reflects Pam Sanchez, Spanish teacher.

Students have been learning clothing vocabulary in their most recent unit. They learn how to describe cost, colors, textures, and sizes of items, and they were challenged to memorize and verbalize the vocabulary and grammar during a live fashion show.

“A lot of preparation goes into the show before it is presented, and students learn so much from the whole process.” states Kristen Kroening, faculty fellow. “Students first write a script, which helps them learn how to spell and write in Spanish. They learn how to pronounce the Spanish words correctly, and they practice verbally communicating in Spanish. They also get to improve their public speaking skills!”

During the preparation process, students were divided into groups where they chose a theme for their group. Then they individually chose six items of clothing and designed an outfit to fit the theme.

Additionally, students were tasked with creating a layout in a fashion magazine to describe their outfits. Natalie Dettman, creative director, shared guidelines on how to make a visually appealing layout and coached students on their graphic design skills.

Way to go, middle school Spanish fashion models!
