High school marine biology students read original stories to kindergarten students

High school marine biology students authored their own, original children's books and read them to kindergarten students.
Students selected a marine animal in the Georgia Aquarium and answered several research questions. Then, they imagined and wrote an educational story for children based on their selected research animal.

“The project serves and benefits the high school students in a variety of ways. First, they learn to give their time to younger students, and second, they practice the communication skills necessary to make their research presentable to a different, younger audience,” explained Kathryn Lanyon, high school science teacher.

Lower school students beamed with excitement and awe as high schoolers shared their stories with them.

“My favorite part about reading day was seeing the kindergarteners' reactions and how engaged they were! They were all amazing to talk to, and I loved meeting Wesleyan’s next generation,” recalled senior Hannah Bennison.

Thank you, high school students, for sharing your unique knowledge about marine biology with lower school students.
