First grade students learn about the importance of kindness

Students in first grade learned about the importance of “filling others’ buckets” through acts of kindness during their recent T.I.E.D. Together lesson. The goal for the lesson was to teach students that they are a part of a larger community and to encourage kindness, social awareness, and empathy.
First grade teacher Cathy Cailor opened the lesson by reading Carol McCloud’s book Have You Filled Your Bucket Today?: A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids. Cailor reminded students that it was God who had the first idea about filling others' buckets when He commanded us to love our neighbor in the Bible.

Cailor encouraged students to always be kind to one another and reminded them of the weight and importance of their words.

“Pick your words carefully, because you can’t completely fix a wrinkled heart. You can only smooth it out,” stated Cailor.

Cailor directed students to Luke 6:35 which says, “Love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.”

After the lesson, students were asked to write down acts of kindness. Acts of kindness listed included the following:
  • Give a hug.
  • Lend a hand.
  • Help someone up.
  • Offer to be a friend.
  • Be very nice.
  • Love on people.
  • Share.
  • Help pick someone up when they fall.
Way to go, first grade!
