Middle school students learn how diversity reflects God's kingdom

Diversity Support Coordinator Indyasia Fowler introduced middle school students to R.E.A.L. (Restorative, Education, Awareness, Leadership) Talk. R.E.A.L. Talk’s purpose is to encourage students to have courageous conversations. It includes dedicated programming during the school day with follow-up discussions in faculty-led small groups called Pack Groups.
Fowler began her introduction to R.E.A.L. Talk by describing the importance of diversity. She reminded students that diversity was created by God to reflect His kingdom.

“We must learn to love our neighbors as ourselves even if they are different,” she explained.

Fowler showed the middle school students an image of hundreds of colorful squares. She invited students to choose their favorite. Then, she showed a beautiful photo of a mosaic made up of all the tiny squares.

“We are all different, but [we are] part of the character of God,” she shared. “It takes all of us to reflect the image of God because He is so vast and much bigger than our understanding.”

After reminding students of the importance of diversity, Fowler further described the purpose of R.E.A.L. Talk. She explained that her hope is for students to learn about vocabulary, norms, and etiquette related to diversity and to become leaders, change agents, and advocates in the world.

Fowler explained boundaries and expectations for R.E.A.L. Talk. She challenged students to be curious, but kind. She called students to be respectful with both their words and actions, choosing the appropriate time, place, and tone to ask questions. She instructed students to avoid labels, name-calling, and making light of serious topics.

In upcoming Pack Groups, students will talk about identity. Students will use the G.R.A.C.E. Model to talk about their differences and qualities that make them unique.

“Even though we find our identity in Christ, certain parts of our personality are an important part of us,” claims Fowler.

Thank you, middle school diversity team, for taking the time to engage our students in important conversations and celebrating diversity that so beautifully reflects God’s kingdom.
