Faculty and students gather for first all-school chapel since 2019

Wesleyan students, faculty, and parents recently attended the first all-school chapel in Yancey Gymnasium since 2019.
The chapel began with student-led worship, and the entire gymnasium rang with shouts of praise thanking the Lord for his forgiveness. Students sang lyrics proclaiming their need for the Lord’s grace and mercy and their hope in his forgiveness.

During chapel, pre-first students performed “He’s Not Here / Lord, I Lift Your Name on High,” a song from their play, and the middle school chorus performed “When You Believe,” by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey.

In line with the 2021-2022 Christian Life theme “Flourish,” Caroline Croley ‘23 read an excerpt from “Fight to Flourish” by Jennie Lusko. She urged her peers to utilize pain and hardship to flourish and grow in their faith.

Over the past school year, each month of chapels focused on a specific fruit of the Spirit listed in Galatians 5:22-23. The final devotion shared at all-school chapel centered around the final and most important fruit of the Spirit: love.

Director of Christian Life Greg Lisson began the devotional with a video timelapse of a plant growing. Lisson pointed out that this plant had to grow downward before it could grow upward and produce fruit. Similarly, the body of Christ must first grow down into the soil of God’s love for us before we can begin to produce fruits of the Spirit.

Lisson reminded audience members of 1 John 4:19, which says, “We love because he first loved us.” He pointed out that love is the only fruit of the Spirit that is a verb.

It was such a special time gathering as a school body and celebrating what the Lord has done over the 2021-2022 school year.
