Middle schoolers dance with Atlanta Chinese Dance Company

The month of May is recognized as Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. In celebration of AAPI Heritage Month, Wesleyan middle school students attended an amazing show from the Atlanta Chinese Dance Company in Marchman Gymnasium.
It was such a beautiful time as students learned about Chinese culture through various dances and props. Performers used 100% pure silk umbrellas to spin in the dances. Students loved learning about a teapot with an extremely long sprout used to keep the temperature of tea exactly right! This also doubled as a prop that the Atlanta Chinese Dance Company flipped and leapt over.

Students volunteered to “go on stage” to learn the three basic positions of the Thai dance. Faculty also joined in to show off their moves!

Each volunteer learned how to open and close traditional fans as they moved from one dance position to the next. The entire middle school body mastered counting to three in Chinese, while the students and teachers performed the three-motion dance.

Made up of 56 ethnic groups, China is filled with beautiful and unique cultural traditions. It was such an honor to learn about these traditions and cultural elements from the Atlanta Chinese Dance Company!
