Middle school reading bowl team wins Metro-Atlanta Private School Reading Bowl

Congratulations to the middle school reading bowl team who won their recent competition at Greater Atlanta Christian (GAC) School! After six rounds of head-to-head competition with teams from GAC and Cornerstone, the Wesleyan team earned more points than any other team and was crowned the Metro-Atlanta Private School Reading Bowl champion!
Six students compete on the middle school reading bowl team, and every student committed to reading ten assigned books between October and January. Each student selected three of the books on which they would become an “expert” and serve as the leader for those books. The book list included both fiction and non-fiction:
  • B. B. Alston’s Amari and the Night Brothers.
  • Ruth Behar’s Letters from Cuba.
  • Alex and Brett Harris’ Do Hard Things.
  • J. Hendrix’ The Faithful Spy: Dietrich Bonhoeffer and the Plot to Kill Hitler.
  • Katherine Johnson’s Reaching for the Moon.
  • Gregory Mone’s Atlantis: the Accidental Invasion.
  • Laura Ruby’s York: The Shadow Cipher Book 1.
  • C. Soontornvat’s All Thirteen: The Incredible Cave Rescue of the Thai Boys’ Soccer Team.
  • Ali Standish’s How to Disappear Completely.
  • J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit.
Shonda Duke, librarian and reading bowl sponsor, explained that reading bowl is a “great way for kids who love to read to experience some comradery with peers with similar interests and to experience competition in a typically academic or recreational activity.” Duke also shared that many students on the team built cross-grade friendships.

Middle school reading bowl team members include:
  • Ellie Ahn
  • Laura Grace Bush
  • Alexa Chase
  • Mike Hughes
  • Tom Hughes
  • Troy Nguyen
Way to go, middle school reading bowl team!
