Middle and high school Hispanic Heritage Month chapels held outdoors

Middle and high school students and faculty welcomed guest speaker Yuri Lopez to chapel to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. Now a national speaker and soccer mentor, Lopez shared her story as a Honduran orphan and how to carry the hope of Christ through all circumstances.
As a child, Lopez was separated from her family, including her twin sister, and she grew up in 14 different orphanages in Honduras. At six years old, she received an Operation Christmas Child shoebox gift, which included a toothbrush of her very own and a pack of ten pencils- more pencils than she had ever owned! The box also included a photo of the girl who sent the box and a note that read, “Jesus loves you, and I love you too.” That note and the accompanying gift were pivotal encouragements that reminded Lopez that her hope is in Christ alone.

Lopez joined the Wesleyan community not only for Hispanic Heritage Month but also to celebrate the first time since March 2020 in which all middle school students and all high school students could experience chapel as entire divisions. Both the middle school chapel and the high school chapel were held on the Morris-Fletcher Quadrangle in front of Wesley Hall. Enjoying the crisp morning and bright sun, students gathered on blankets and towels to worship and enjoy the Lord together.
