Spanish students celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with kite-flying contest
Students taking Spanish seminar celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month by building, testing, and somewhat flying traditional kites.
Students first learned about the history and cultural importance of traditional kite-flying competitions, and then they carefully built their own kites. Drawing on physics knowledge and artistic creativity, students evaluated and selected their kite’s tail weight and decorated the kites to demonstrate Hispanic culture and personal flair. The flying contest took place on Gaebelein baseball field on an unfortunately still day. Without wind, the kites had limited flight time, but they still delighted the kindergarten, pre-first, and first grade students that came to cheer on the high school students.
