As the world fights the COVID-19 pandemic, Wesleyan graduates around the globe are working in various fields supporting this effort. In the coming weeks and months, we will profile alumni working directly in the battle against COVID-19. The COVID pandemic has created many challenges for all of us, and the types of professions working to help with the pandemic widens daily. This certainly is the case with the work that Katie Van Laeke ’14 is doing in her role as a technology consultant for Deloitte.

As a part of the CARES Act, Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), and Health Care Enhancement Act, funds were provided to eligible healthcare providers for healthcare related expenses or lost revenues due to COVID. When providers accepted these funds, they agreed to report on how the funds were utilized.
Along with her Deloitte team, Katie has been designing and building the website which will be used by providers to report on their funds (you can check it out at PRFreporting.hrsa.gov). This required the team to develop detailed processes for the registration and reporting of funds provided.

“This has been the most memorable and impactful project I’ve been a part of since joining Deloitte in 2018,” Katie says. “Economic support in this crisis is important and understanding how that support was used is critical to the provision of future aid. By creating a place where providers can report on the funds they received,  the Human Resources Services Administration (HRSA) and Health and Human Services (HHS) will be able to understand the impact that stimulus funds had on providers and ensure that all money was allocated correctly. While this plays a small role in the response to COVID, our goal is to help ensure that the aid provided was used appropriately, setting the precedent for stimulus funds in the future. This effort would not have been possible without all of the dedicated support from both Deloitte and HRSA.”

Katie Van Laeke is a 2014 Wesleyan alumna. Katie received a B.A in Management Information Systems from the University of Georgia in 2018 and immediately after started work as a technology consultant at Deloitte Consulting.  She lives in Atlanta and these days Katie is enjoying quality time with family and friends while work travel is still suspended.
