Distance Learning Project Spotlight: High School Math

This season of distance learning has been a period of transition and change for students and teachers alike. In this series on distance learning projects, we will highlight classes that have used unique projects to keep students engaged while learning their respective course material at home.

High school geometry teacher Andy Free recently came up with a project that utilized the home environment to learn more about geometry. In the project, students located an area of their home that needed to be measured. Examples included a deck, a bedroom, a bathroom, or kitchen. The students then calculated the area using geometry, showed their work, and explained why it may be important to find the area of that particular part of the house. Free created a video that showed him finding the area of his back deck to find out how much stain he needed to complete his renovation project.

Free’s project creatively used the stay-at-home environment for a practical, real-world project emphasizing the ways that geometry can be used in every day life. Great job Mr. Free!
