Jennifer Nolan Named Wesleyan STAR Student

February 5th, 2019

The Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce has honored Jennifer Nolan as Wesleyan School’s STAR student for the 2018-2019 school year. In turn, Jennifer was able to select the teacher who has had the greatest influence on her academic life to be named Wesleyan’s STAR teacher, and she selected Joseph Cooper.

Beyond stellar academics, Jennifer is a four-year member of Wesleyan’s state-champion softball team, the varsity track team, and Mock Trial. She is also a three-year member of Team Omicron and Wesleyan’s math team and serves as a peer leader for freshmen. Jennifer is Wesleyan’s nominee for the Jefferson Scholarship at the University of Virginia and is currently a semi-finalist for the Stamps President’s Scholarship Program at Georgia Institute of Technology.
When asked why she selected Joseph Cooper as her STAR teacher, Jennifer said, “Mr. Cooper has truly had a daily impact on my life, teaching me all four years of high school and encouraging me to join Mock Trial, which became a passion of mine. Not only does he brighten my day each time I see him and keep me laughing, but he always challenges me to think deeply and broadly – both inside and outside of the classroom.”

Joseph Cooper received his bachelor’s degree in Classical Studies from Davidson College. After teaching for four years at Saint Thomas High School in Texas, he joined the Wesleyan faculty in 2001 and currently teaches AP Latin, Latin Seminar, Latin III, and American Literature. Joseph is also an assistant coach for the varsity volleyball team and a sponsor on the Honor Council.

In its 61st year, the STAR program is sponsored by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) Foundation, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, and the Georgia Department of Education. To obtain the STAR nomination, high school seniors must have the highest score in a single sitting on the SAT, taken through the November test date of their senior year and be in the top 10% or among the top 10 students in their class based on grade point average. Students and their teachers are honored by receiving special recognition in their communities from more than 165 statewide civic organizations and businesses and will be celebrated at a luncheon on March 8, 2019.

We are honored to have Jennifer Nolan and Joseph Cooper represent Wesleyan as our STAR student and teacher. Congratulations to each of them and their families!
