High School Government Classes Visit Richard Russell Federal Building & U.S. Courthouse

November 27th, 2018

On Monday, November 26th, over thirty high school students from three Government classes travelled to downtown Atlanta to see the federal courts of the Northern District of Georgia in action. While on site at the Richard Russell Federal Building & United States Courthouse, the students attended two federal criminal hearings before a United States Magistrate Judge.

The students also visited the United States Bankruptcy Court, where they learned about the structure of the Federal judiciary, including where bankruptcy courts fit into that structure. Throughout the day the students were able to hear from and talk to a number of sitting judges about how the court systems work and the life of a judge. Several of the judges shared their college and career paths with our students, with one judge emphasizing the importance of pursuing a career in something they are passionate about. It was a great opportunity for all to see the practical application of what is learned in the classroom.
