Alumni Return For John Wesley Day Chapel Service

November 15th, 2018

The theme for John Wesley Day is gratitude, and Wesleyan was extremely grateful to welcome back several alumni as a part of two special chapel services on November 15th. Russell Matherly ’12 and Chase Kelly ’16 provided worship music prior to the services and Nick Salyers ’12 spoke to both High School and Middle School students on his Wesleyan experience within the context of the John Wesley Day theme.

Salyers spoke on how John Wesley was inspired by the faith a group of Moravian Christians had while their ship was being pummeled by a hurricane on the way to Savannah, Georgia. They remained grateful to the Lord and sang hymns even when their world was being turned upside down.

Salyers called on the students to have the same sense of gratitude in their lives. He also mentioned a few things that can be blockers to gratitude, including a sense of anxiety about what others think about you and an overall sense of worry.

To wrap it up, Salyers recalled how he wasn’t grateful for everything Wesleyan had to offer while he was in school, and it took him leaving for college to realize what a unique place Wesleyan is. He urged the students to take advantage of their time here at Wesleyan and recognize they have much to be grateful for.
