Faculty Fellows Program

Established in 2005, the Faculty Fellows Program provides recent college graduates an opportunity to experience teaching in an independent school. Through individual mentoring, a variety of professional development opportunities, and immersion in school life, faculty fellows develop foundational skills and gain experience to pursue successful teaching careers as well as valuable work experience for pursuing careers outside the field of education. Classroom and extracurricular responsibilities for fellows vary based on placement and readiness, but all fellows observe their mentor teacher and other faculty before assuming teaching responsibilities. The faculty fellowship is a full-time commitment for one school year.

What to Expect

List of 4 items.

  • Teaching

The teaching experience of faculty fellows varies based on division placement; however, all fellows work under the direct mentorship of a master teacher. The master teacher is readily available to guide and provide information, advice, feedback, and encouragement. Fellows in middle and high school generally assume responsibility for teaching two classes after a period of observing the master teacher. Fellows placed in the lower school share teaching responsibilities with the master teacher and are given opportunities to independently plan units and deliver instruction.
  • Outside the Classroom

Under the guidance of faculty coaches and sponsors, faculty fellows coach and mentor students in our after school programs in athletics, arts, community service, and enrichment. Fellows also assist in leading retreats and mission trips and may choose to lead a grade level Bible studies.
  • Support and Professional Development

While the master teacher provides daily instructional coaching, fellows attend regularly scheduled internship classes as well as meetings with the coordinator for the training of faculty fellows. These classes and meetings provide a forum for discussion of pedagogical principles and practical application of best practices in education. Fellows are also active participants in faculty meetings and professional development opportunities planned on campus.
  • Compensation

In addition to a salary of $27,000 paid over 12 months, faculty fellows are provided housing adjacent to the campus for the school year, lunch on school days, and the option for coverage under the school’s health insurance program.

A Note to Wesleyan Alumni

At this time, Wesleyan alumni will not be eligible to apply for the Faculty Fellows Program. While we welcome the application of alumni for full-time teaching positions, the Faculty Fellows Program is designed to include candidates with a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Please contact Donna Dixon with questions about the alumni policy.
