The Wesleyan Wolves won Game 1 in walk-off fashion scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th to take an 8-7 victory.  Those three runs were just part of the 6 runs they scored in the final 3 innings after falling behind 7-2.  Relief pitcher Stacy Johnson came into the game in the 3rd inning and provided 4.1 innings of solid pitching to give the Wolves a chance to fight back.  Finding themselves down 7-5 headed into the final frame with already one out recorded, Grayson McCollum blooped a single over the infield before the second out of the inning was made.  So with 2 outs and a man on second, Bo Britt hit a double down the left field line to score McCollum, Forrest Lietz then singled to score Carter Hayes who entered as a pinch runner for Britt, and finally Reed Purcell laced a single to center field to drive home Lietz who had advanced to second on a wild pitch the pitch before Purcell’s hit.  That hit was one of 3 hits in the opener for Purcell.  He collected 2 RBI in the game.  Lietz also had a multi-hit game with 2 singles and an RBI.

Dominick Scalese was the story in Game 2 as he threw a complete game shutout while striking out 11 and only surrendering 2 hits, his only 2 baserunners.  Schley Gordy had 2 hits as did Forrest Lietz.  Wesleyan pushed one run across in the top of the first and two more in the second, and that would be all the run support Scalese would need.

Wesleyan is now 18-9 on the season, and they are set to match up with Ringgold in the second round on Saturday.

4/20/23
The Wesleyan Wolves won a back and forth game tonight by the score of 10-9 at Lumpkin County High School in Dahlonega, Georgia.  With the win, the Wolves secured a #2-seed heading into Monday’s state playoffs where they will host the Hebron Christian Academy Lions.  Wesleyan scored the first four runs on the game in the top of the second inning, but Lumpkin County answered with 5 runs in the bottom of the inning.  Wesleyan added four more in the top of the third, but Lumpkin County tacked on 2 more of their own runs in the bottom of the third and one more in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Wesleyan added single runs in the sixth and seventh inning, but the Indians would not go away as they scored one in the bottom of the seventh and had the bases loaded when the final out was made.

Schley Gordy had 3 hits for the Wolves including a double and 3 stolen bases.  He also drove in 2 runs.  Reed Purcell also collected 3 hits including a double and had 2 RBI.  And Will Tucker drove in 2 runs on a double to get the scoring started.  Stacy Johnson threw 3.1 innings of relief of Purcell giving up only 3 hits to hold the Indians down while Wesleyan mounted its comeback.  Gordy threw the final 1.1 innings to record the save.

Wesleyan finished the regular season with a record of 16-9 and 13-5 within region play.

4/18/23
Game 1 was a back-and-forth affair.  The Indians jumped ahead with 2 runs in the first, but the Wolves came right back with 7 unanswered runs in the second and third innings.  But, the Indians would score 16 unanswered of their own in the fourth and fifth innings to seize a commanding 18-7 lead.  Wesleyan would scratch back but could not get close enough to actually threaten.  Schley Gordy would collect 5 RBI on a homerun and a pair of singles.  Dominick Scalese would hit 2 homeruns and tally 3 RBI.  And Townes Hardy would deliver on 3 singles and pick up 2 RBI.

Dominick Scalese seemed to have all the answers in Game 2 pitching all 7 innings, surrendering only 3 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 9.  He also hit a 2-run homer to put an exclamation point on Wolves’ lead at 7-2.  Bo Britt got the Wolves on the board in the fourth inning with an RBI double, and then Forrest Lietz hit a 2-run homer to give the Wolves a 3-2 lead from which they would not look back.
