Middle and high school band students spread Christmas cheer

Middle and high school students invited the Wesleyan community to get into the holiday spirit at the Christmas band concert on Dec. 7, 2022, in Powell Theater.
“One of my favorite parts of the Christmas concert is that it includes fun music with a variety of styles, which allows students to embrace challenges and grow,” reflected Jeff Foster, band director.

The fifth grade band performed traditional songs like “Shoo Fly” arranged by Ryan Meeboer and a “Pep-Tune Medley,” arranged themselves.

The sixth grade band played “Cool it!” by Randy Navarre and “First Holiday Fanfare” by Matthew R. Putnam.
The advanced band performed festive songs like “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” by Albert Hague and “Feliz Navidad” by Jose Feliciano.

Foster reflected on the many ways that members of the high school band improved and grew as musicians as they prepared for the concert. He noted that the songs they played, such as “Comfort and Joy” arranged by Rick Hirsch and “Sleigh Ride” by Leroy Anderson were very advanced.

“Students have learned to improve their technique (speed of articulating notes, finger dexterity, and range). They have matured in terms of their sound and how they play together, as well,” stated Foster.

It was a joy to watch our students use the musical gifts the Lord has given them to celebrate the birth of Christ. Way to go, middle and high school band students.
