Wesleyan alumnae and Auburn University Marching Band and Flagline inspire current Wesleyan Marching Wolves
On Saturday, Oct. 8, current members of the Wesleyan Marching Wolves visited Norcross High School to watch the Auburn University Marching Band rehearse. Among performing members were Wesleyan alumnae Anastasia Johnston ‘20, captain of the Auburn University Flagline, and Izzy Rodriguez ‘20.
Jeff Foster, Wesleyan’s band director, shared that both Johnston and Rodriguez significantly influenced the Wesleyan Marching Wolves.
Johnston was a four-year member of the Marching Wolves, and she was the color guard captain her senior year. Additionally, she played flute in the symphonic band. Rodriguez played clarinet and saxophone in the concert band for four years, and she was a three-year member of the color guard.
Rodriguez described being a part of a band as being a part of a family, explaining that it is a great way to meet people and make friends. She spoke of the deep impact Wesleyan’s band program had on her experience at the school.
“It was a very special experience for me, and it really shaped my time as a student at Wesleyan,” stated Rodriguez.
She also shared about the challenges that the Auburn University Marching Band has required her to overcome.
“The style of marching at Auburn is very different than what I experienced in high school, so that was definitely a challenge for me,” Rodriguez reflected. “It’s a huge time commitment, which can also be challenging at times, but it’s so worth it.”
Rodriguez said that if she could share one thing with current Wesleyan band members, it would be to enjoy being a part of a smaller band, because it is a unique experience where you really get to know all your fellow band members.
