High school G.R.A.C.E. club visits Center for Civil and Human Rights

The students in the G.R.A.C.E. Diversity Club recently visited the Center for Civil and Human Rights (CCHR).  While at the CCHR, students journeyed through various eras of the Civil Rights Movement and learned about experiences that changed the trajectory of our country.  They also learned about past and current human rights struggles from around the world.
“Students were able to engage with history that is not only familiar to them and the learning in their classrooms, but also be exposed to new events that are not always discussed,” explained Jennifer Pinkett-Smith, director of diversity.

Many students described the experience as eye-opening or emotional. Junior Kyla Richardson shared that “the middle floor [of the CCHR] was emotional for me because of the lunch counter experience. We heard about the struggles and sacrifices many faced during that time, and it made me think about what I would have done if that was me.”

“The trip was a very eye-opening experience for me, and I enjoyed learning about some of the civil rights leaders across the globe whose impact we sometimes overlook,” described senior Matthew Jones. “I felt a little emotional during the audio experience of what it was like to participate in a sit-in during the Civil Rights Movement.”
