Face shields can help students in speech perception, enhancing their impact on early learning while also maintaining safety standards.
Studies suggest that in children's early years, they learn from auditory and visual cues from faces and mouths for producing speech sounds and learning new words. Additionally, seeing how a teacher is forming their mouth is important in learning foreign language at all grade levels.
Face shields are clear plastic barriers that cover the face and reduce respiratory droplet transmission. Face shields can be swapped in for teaching activities that benefit, allowing children to have full visibility of facial expressions and lip movements.
Wesleyan teachers in certain subjects and grade levels are incorporating face shields in scenarios where they could enhance instruction. In all other instances during the school day, teachers are wearing face coverings as recommended by the department of health.
