11th Grade English and Composition

  • High School (9th-12th)

Available at the standard and honors levels, the core of this course is a survey of British literature, covering readings as diverse as Beowulf and Brave New World; however, the scope of the readings extends beyond the traditional British literary canon. The course seeks to explore voices that challenge the consequences of empire as well as add diversity to the wealth of modern literature, including works by Colson Whitehead, Noah Harari, and Mary Shelley. By reading these narratives in conjunction with canonical texts, the content explores the relationship between literature and culture, as well as the human experiences to which literature and poetry give voice. Marked emphasis is placed on writing skills, critical thinking, grammar, vocabulary, usage, and style.
