Curriculum Overview

The middle school acts as a bridge between the lower and high schools. It is a time for students to begin to explore a variety of activities, discover their gifts, take responsibility for their own learning, and develop effective study habits.

In some ways, the middle school experience is similar for every student. In other ways, the younger middle school students (grades 5–6) and the older students (grades 7–8) have different routines. They are grouped separately for certain activities to reflect the fact that children in the middle grades have both whole-group and more specialized needs.

All students take courses in English, math, science, history, and physical education. Students pursue modern and classical languages, Bible, technology, and the arts in configurations that vary by grade level.

  • Gender Differentiated Instruction

In middle school, all students in grades 5 through 7 are separated by gender in English and math. At each grade level, there is advanced math for boys and for girls.
  • Daily Schedule

The order of daily classes rotates from day to day for all middle school students, providing variety in the routine. Students experience different classrooms and teachers throughout the day, and they attend a weekly chapel service, biweekly small group meetings called Pack Time, and multiple assemblies or activity periods. • Office Hours

Middle school students are invited to work with teachers during office hours, which are offered before and after school. Office hours allow students to dig deeper into an area of interest, ask questions to clarify or reinforce topics covered in class, prepare for upcoming assignments and assessments, and build relationships with their teachers.
