The high school program at Wesleyan School is designed to build in each student an awareness of the gifts and talents of the individual. It is a place where students can develop into the person they want to be: confident, prepared, and self-directed. The high school offers them new opportunities --- academically, socially, and in the extracurricular arenas. In an effort to help students gain a better understanding of themselves and become willing to take risks in the face of challenges, the faculty encourages the students to go outside their comfort zones both in and out of the classroom.
The goal for the high school students is that they begin to develop a healthy self-awareness - mentally, physically, and spiritually - of not only themselves but also the world they live in. We hope to instill in students the reality that they were created by God in His image and are to use the talents He has given them in service and stewardship to their community. Our JOY motto -- Jesus, Others, and Yourself -- exemplifies the mission of how we should live our lives. As students begin to mature, we hope they will begin to take ownership of their own mental, physical and spiritual growth. With the help of the adults in their lives, we encourage the students to become accountable for the concerns they face in our community.
We ask students to be involved in at least one major activity. Although a small school, Wesleyan School offers most activities, which are regularly available at larger schools. We believe students will not feel they are a part of the bigger mission of the school if not connected to the community through extra curricular activities. We recognize it is often difficult to balance academics, extracurricular activities and the personal life; however, we support and encourage that aspect of the maturation process. Wesleyan is a place where students are encouraged to try new activities in an effort to test themselves and discover their passions. If one avenue is not successful, the support is available to encourage testing the waters in another arena. Whether trying out for a play, the marching band, or participating in golf, or cross-country, Wesleyan can help each student develop the skills and the confidence to find his or her passion.
The goal of the academic life of Wesleyan is to prepare each student for the next step in his or her academic journey -- college. Students can choose from standard, honors and Advanced Placement courses to create an appropriate learning profile. Wesleyan offers a liberal arts program that concentrates on depth rather than a breadth of subject matter. We hope that students master the core subjects before they graduate from high school. In these courses, students wrestle with the ideas, events, and discoveries that have shaped this nation and the world. The rigor of the curriculum is matched by the school's commitment to small classes and an advisor system that encourages the development of personal relationships between advisor and student.
High school is the time when students begin their journey of self-discovery about their spiritual, academic and intellectual identity. During that journey, we hope their passion will be exposed and pursued. It is a time to explore new avenues and improve on their gifts. Wesleyan offers a wide variety of activities in order to discover interests, find passions, and attempt to use the gifts they have been given. |
