Writing Lab

Available for grades 5-12, the Writing Lab is a resource provided for the purpose of helping students become better writers, editors, and communicators. The Writing Lab is open Monday through Thursday during after-school office hours. Students should email the Writing Lab instructors (Mrs. Emily Zavitz and Mrs. Knoxie Roche) in order to set an appointment. Students should also include their current paper, the prompt, and/or their specific question in the email. The Writing Lab is intended to help students in writing across all content areas.

What the Writing Lab can do for students:
  • Help students recognize strengths and weaknesses in their writing.
  • Instruct students about how to correct and/or avoid grammar errors.
  • Help students develop a clear thesis and organize their thoughts.
  • Ensure that our students’ ideas are clearly communicated.
For students who cannot access the Writing Lab during office hours:
  • English teachers in grades 9-12 meet with HS students during lunch. These midday Writing Labs are established per grade level, and each teacher’s syllabus indicates the specific instructor and room number where his/her students can receive aid during the lunch hour.
  • In the middle school, Mrs. Jane Leake offers a morning Writing Lab located in Wesley 177. This Writing Lab is open from 8:05 until 8:45 Monday through Friday by appointment only. Students may schedule an appointment by emailing Mrs. Leake. The email must include the name of the student’s homeroom teacher, the day she/he would like to come to the lab, and the specific topic the student would like to review.

Grade Chairs

High School Grade Chair

The High School grade chairs serve as the first line of communication with parents and faculty about issues that affect the academic performance of the student. They advise, challenge, encourage, and nurture students as they set and attempt to reach their own goals while encouraging the development of class unity and sense of community. In conjunction with the principal, the grade chairs devise the best program of study and most effective policies for students’ academic progress.

Middle School Grade Chair

The middle school grade chairs serve as the first line of communication with parents and faculty in regard to academic, social, and spiritual issues that affect middle school students. Additionally, the middle school grade chairs lead their respective team of teachers in their designated grade level and work with the principal to plan and promote the programs of the middle school.

Lower School Grade Chair

The lower school grade chairs lead their respective team of teachers in their designated grade level and work with the lower school principal to plan and promote the programs of the lower school. All grade chairs teach full-time, and attend regularly-scheduled meetings two times monthly with the lower school principal to discuss time sensitive issues and goal implementation.
